Winter Solstice in Australia

June 21 marks the Winter Solstice in Australia - the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Solstices and equinoxes relate to seasons, harvest, and livelihood. They symbolise the fertility of the land, agricultural systems, cultural heritage, and millenary traditions.

June 21 is the International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice.

Mindful that the solstices and equinoxes symbolize the fertility of the land, agricultural and food production systems, and cultural heritage, the United Nations General Assembly acknowledged that celebrating those events embodies the unity of the cultural heritage and centuries-long traditions.

Farmers markets play a vital role in connecting producers with consumers. During winter, our VFMA-accredited farmers' markets continue to operate, offering fresh produce, artisanal food products, and seasonal specialties. Shoppers can find locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products.

The winter solstice in Australia reminds us of our connection to the natural world and the changing seasons. Farmers adapt, communities celebrate, and the land continues to sustain us.
